Fittings are used in pipe and plumbing systems to bring together straight pipe or tubing sectors, to accommodate to different sizes or shapes, and modulate water flow, for example. Fittings, particularly uncommon types, can be costly, and takes time, materials, and tools to set, so they are important part of piping and plumbing systems. Valves are technically fittings.
The fittings for pipe and tubing are most frequently of the same material as the pipe or tubing being joined, for example, metals and PVC. Any way, any material that is permitted by code may be used, but must be compatible with the other materials in the system, the water being transferred and the temperatures and pressures inside and outside of the system. For example, brass-bodied fittings are common in otherwise copper piping and plumbing systems.
Basic pipes fitting are being placed between two lengths of pipe or tube permitting a change of direction, usually at 90° or 45°. When the two ends of different in size, met they usually called reducer elbow. Most elbows can be taken in short radius or long radius of types. The short radius elbows have a mid point to end distance equal to the NPS in inches, while the long radius is 1.5 times the NPS in inches. Small elbows are available every where; big elbows are promptly available in ABS, plastic, (PVC) for DWV, sewage and central vacuums, CPVC and copper for 1950s to 1960s houses with copper drains.
A reducer allows for a change in pipe length to meet hydraulic conditions of the net work or to accommodate to given piping of a different size. Reducers are usually eccentric reducers. When obligatory to maintain the same top- or bottom-of-pipe level so such are used.
A tee is used to join or divide a water flow. Generally for the same inlet and outlet sizes, but 'reducing' tees are usually has been used as well along with a simple cross which has either one inlet and three outlets, or vice versa. So in fire sprinkler systems, generally crosses are very much common, but they are not in plumbing due to such extra cost as compared to using two tees. Generally such three outlets referred to the usual named in order; left, middle, right.
There are certain type of pipe fitting is sometimes liquid or gas tight, which covers the end part of a pipe. A cap has a same function like a plug which has been used to closes off the end of a pipe, which has been similar to a cap but it fits perfectly inside the fitting as per mated to. In a threaded metal pipe plumbing network, plugs have male threads. Short stub of pipe, normally threaded iron, brass, CPVC or copper; intermittently just bare copper. A pipe with two male ends with short stub is known as the Nipple. So Nipples are frequently used for plumbing and hoses, and also as valves for funnels and pipes.
Hydraulics are used for handling highly extreme water pressures to do any useful operation, like in the actuators for machinery such as backhoes.
