Bathroom plumbing tips

Business RSS Feed

Your bathroom is certainly a very sensitive area, so take care of it. Problems with your sink, bathtub or toilet can make your life literally hell. So try avoiding them. Proper initial installation of the plumbing system, systematic checks during its functional life and proper care are three important tips which should not be ignored, as they are the key to a long problem free operation of your bathroom plumbing fixtures.

Rather than directly calling a professional to handle the problems with your bathroom, in case they arise, it’s better to get some basic knowledge about how to go about such situations yourself. In case of clogs, it’s not a bad idea to plunge, but it’s not the best either. Well, you might be successful too so don’t cringe away from plunging. Place the plunger on the mouth of the drain and plunge it up and down a few times. This movement leads to changes in the pressure of the air inside the pipe, which might cause the clogging content to pop up into the plunger. However, it is also a possibility that the plunger would force the clogging content even further down the drain. It is not a good idea to use a drain cleaner for unclogging a drain as its going to take away a little of your precious pipe along with the clog.

Try to avoid letting anything go down the drain that doesn’t dissolve in water. In the toilet drain, only human waste and toilet paper is meant to be disposed of. When you drain down the facial tissue paper, any cloth or any other solid material, it clogs the drain. Moreover, try installing strainers on top of the drains in the sink and the bathtub so that hair or soap scum or any other material doesn’t reach beyond the top of the drain.

Augers are known as plumbers’ snakes. Their function is to put a length of steel cord inside a drain, using small motors. The steel cord has blades on its tip which cut the clogging material upon reaching it or pierces it and brings it out. A simple auger can be used in any drain in your home and is one of the most effective devices in handling such situations.

Well, these were the measures for ‘handling’ bathroom plumbing problems. But it is not necessary that you wait for something to happen and then take action. It’s always a good option to take preventative measures. Flushing a large bucket full of lukewarm water down the toilet once a week prevents clogging in the drains and helps in gradually dissolving any buildups. Mixing a little dish detergent with the water can be an added benefit as it lubricates the drains too, which helps in effective functioning. In the sink and the bathtub, you can let the hot water run down for a minute once a week to achieve your goal of clog free drains!
