Maintenance of garage doors

Business RSS Feed

As the word depicts the meaning, these garage doors are the large gates that allow the passage of automobiles and human beings into the house. They are basically of two type, they can either be manual or automatic. They come in different sizes and prices depending on their features. Typical garage doors are manual doors and are those whose maintenance is not such a big issue. There are possibilities that these gates require constant maintenance or else they will wear out like other daily use items.

The maintenance of these doors depends on the material being used in the construction of the door. Basically these doors are made up of steel, iron, aluminum and wood etc. there are a certain precautionary measure for the maintenance of these doors. For instance, for a typical garage door made up of iron need to be treated in this way. Give all rollers, hinges, rollers and tracks a good squirt with a penetrating solvent. Lubricate the pulleys on extension-spring openers and the bearings on torsion-spring openers. Wipe a little oil on the torsion spring if it is rusty and binds up. The problem with these iron and steel gates is that they get rusty so these precautionary measures need to be taken in order to prevent doors from rusting. Other than that what you need to do is wipe everything related to the door clean, and then apply specified fluid or oil, such as a thick lubricant used for the better working of the door to the same parts. If any roller or the track seems to be stuck, try to soak them in some kerosene oil. Use a small brush (an old toothbrush works great) to work the kerosene into the cracks and main roots of that roller or track. Remove any rust with steel wool very carefully. Wipe all parts clean and then apply lubricant once again. Apply lubricant on the track as well as the rollers and the sealing of the door until it functions smoothly.

Garage door maintenance is often needed on the door opener where most of the force is inserted. If your garage door opener is operated by a chain or drive screw, apply the same lubricant to the full length of that chain. Move the door once or twice until it gets dipped in the lubricant and start to move freely and without much of the effort. Check any weather stripping along the sides of the doors. Adjust if it is jamming against the sides, and replace if necessary. In most of the cases replacement is not necessary you can always get it working with the help of the lubricants and kerosene and if your garage door is wood and it doesn't have bottom weather stripping, make sure it has been sealed or painted. Touch up as needed, and consider adding weather stripping to them because wooden gates are observed to wear out faster than the steel or iron gates. The maintenance of garage doors is not that difficult if done correctly.
