Corporate identity theft - it can happen to your business too

Business RSS Feed

If you have your own business you probably know all about creating a corporate identity. Well, once you have that corporate identity established you should never have to worry about corporate identity theft. Your corporate identity should get to be familiar with your target audience and still stay fresh and new to attract new customers to your business.

There are things you can do to accomplish this.

1. Update your blog regularly. Don't have one? Start one. If you do not know how to start one on your own then hire one of your general population staff who does this on the side and promote them to take charge of your corporate identity. work with them closely. They will be able to do what you want with the blog and you can still have more control over the content.

2. Let different employees contribute content to the blog by inviting them to be guest bloggers. You will benefit by doing this because you will not be the only one contributing content and it will keep things interesting to those who are reading the blog.

3. Get your identity out there. Sponsor something. A softball team, a 5k for a charity or two, how about a food drive for the local food pantry. Get yourself out there doing good for the community and people will respect you and your corporation. Solidifying yourself in the community means never having to say your sorry or worrying about corporate identity theft.

4. Get things out there that have your name on them. Flood the market with who you are and what you do. Give away free stuff, not just once but all the time. Part of your budget should be earmarked for just this sort of thing. Just like the petty cash box but bigger.

5. Have the blogger you hired also be responsible for updating the website. Keep things current. This is where the saying, "Keeping up with the Jones'" actually means something. Whatever your competitors are doing you want to be doing, too. Whatever they are doing find someone who knows how to do it better.

6. Nobody likes to be wrong or make mistakes. If something happens and apologies or restitution need to be made then stand up and with your head held high, make them. If you step up when a mistake is made, people in the community will respond favorably and respect you more for it. Admit your mistake, show people how you are going to fix it and follow through, get it fixed as soon as you can, then just get on with business. Do not wait around for praise. Never fish for compliments, it is unseemly.

7. Always keep your mission statement in the forefront. Have it printed up and frame it and hang it next to the door of your office and any other place you can think of that people might read it. Up hold this mission statement with everything you do and people will remember you and you will never have to worry about corporate identity theft.
