Office body language - important in todays economy

Being able to read office body language may not help you get ahead in the game but it also will not hurt anything either. Gestures, body positioning, and facial expressions are all good to watch and learn to interpret. Touch can get you or whoever is using it into trouble and be seen as an unwanted advance so just don't do it in the workplace unless you are really good friends and have that trust between you.

Body language is very expressive and does not lie. Office body language can emphasize, contradict, or embellish the spoken word. General observation techniques will help you tell the differences between them.

Fifty to sixty-five percent of communication comes in the form of body language. The spoken word is only about seven percent of all communication and sometimes cannot be trusted to send messages correctly. Body language, on the other hand will tell you all you need to know about what the other person is feeling and thinking.

For instance, if you go to your boss and ask how you did on that last assignment and she doesn't answer right away, looks down, then mumbles that you did "just fine", and brushes you off so she doesn't have to talk to you anymore then you can be pretty sure that there was a problem with your work.

Watch what goes on near the water cooler, do the same people meet up there everyday at the same time? What do they look like when they talk? Are they leaning in and speaking in hushed tones? They are probably gossiping about other office workers.

Check out the positioning of bodies in meetings or in the cafeteria at lunch. Does the woman who just got approached by the man seem inviting? Does she smile, raise her eye brows and open up her sitting posture as he approaches? Or, does she turn herself away, squint, and cross her arms or legs when he gets close? If she does the latter, she most likely does not want to speak to this man and wishes he would just go away so she could eat her lunch in peace.

When someone sees something they don't like, they try to get it out of their line of sight any way they can, closing the eyes is the first line of defense when choosing not to see something. Eye contact, or the lack thereof, can tell speak volumes about how someone is feeling. The pupils dilate when they see something they like and constrict when they see something they don't. No one can control their eye movements completely and that is why the eyes are the great indicators of how we feel that they are.

If you use eye contact correctly, you can seem confident and in control. Do not blink too much though because if you do, or you flutter your eyes when speaking then you will seem untruthful. Liars blink more.

These are a few tips you can learn to try to read office body language better to improve your chances in the workplace.
