External hard drive price - buying the right one

Articles RSS Feed

When shopping for an external hard drive price is just one consideration. There is nothing to be gained by buying the cheapest drive you can find only to realize in a month or two that the unit is too slow, or doesn't have enough disk space for your needs. Make sure when you're out shopping for your drive you take all the factors into consideration so that whatever money you do spend, is well spent.

The price of an external hard drive will vary significantly from one unit to another. The major elements that will determine the price of the unit are:

1. The speed of the drive. Most people who only need a backup for their home computer will get by just fine with a 7200 rpm hard drive. You can go up as high as 15,000 rpm, but for the vast majority of people that would be overkill and there is no point in spending your money on it.

2. You will want to make sure that whatever drive you get has a fan to keep the unit cool. Many people overlook this aspect, probably because out of sight means out of mind. Your desktop or laptop has a fan to cool it, but since it's inside the unit and you don't see it, you may not think of it. Overheating is one of the biggest dangers computers face, make sure your external drive is well cooled or it simply won't last long.

3. How will you transfer data from your laptop or desktop to your external drive? In most cases it will be with a USB cable. Please note that for most home users a USB 2 is sufficient. If you have to download a ton of high definition movies you may want to get a USB3 connection since it will be much faster (it's also going to be more expensive and may not work with an older model computer, make sure this is something you really need, most people don't).

4. The brand of the hard drive will have an impact on the price as well. Saving money is one thing, but you don't want to purchase a drive that isn't going to perform... for a long time. If you're unsure of what brand to get looking at the feedback on online sites can help you get a better idea. You can also go to forums that cater to people who are interested in computer hardware and ask for recommendations.

Depending on which features and brands you choose the price of your hard drive can be anywhere from around $60 all the way up to several thousand dollars (though these are more for a big business than household use).

With so many options out there, I hope this brief article has given you some information so you have a better idea of what to look for when you go shopping for your external hard drive. And remember that there are a lot of features to take into consideration when trying to find the best external hard drive price.
