Pocket external hard drive - benefits galore

Articles RSS Feed

There are always new things, or better versions of existing things, being introduced when it comes to technology. One of the neatest, for the computer users among us, are the various models of pocket external hard drive. It used to be that only big businesses would need any more than 1 GB of storage, but with all the HD movies, digital photos and music, even the household user can quickly fill up a 1 GB hard drive.

These drives offer the best of both worlds, huge storage ability with a very small size. These units can easily fit in your pocket or briefcase but can hold up to 1 million photos and over 400 full length movies (by the way, all that can be done with a 'small' 320 GB unit).

There are a lot of options when it comes to pocket sized drives. Most of them weigh only several ounces, are very sleek and just plain cool looking. They are also very easy to use. You don't need any outside power cord since they are plug and play. All you need to do is attach the USB cable to the USB port on the hard drive and the other end of the cable to the USB port on your computer, that's it. You're all ready to transfer your files. Most units will be sold with the USB cable so you don't have to go out and get one.

Unlike the internal hard drives that came with your computer, the external varieties are more shock and impact resistant and can usually handle all but the hardest of knocks. Even though it doesn't make much sense, these external drives are actually more quiet when operating than many of the internal drives.

When it comes time to 'go shopping' for your new drive, you should first decide what size you want. Do you want/ need 320 GB or do you think you'll need more? Of course if you buy a bigger drive, you'll pay more. But still the cost is pretty inexpensive with the average price for a 320 GB at around $50 and the price for a 1 TB external drive between around $80 and $110. No matter which option you choose, you can get a huge amount of backup storage for very little money.

Now that you've determined what size you want, you can then go online to various shopping sites, or forums that specialize in computer hardware, and ask around. Find out which makes and models people are talking about and which ones they recommend. Word of mouth is usually one of the best ways to find out if a model really delivers or not.

Also, when you're comparing prices at this stage, also compare what each unit comes with. Most units, but not all, will come with the USB cable. It's also nice to have full instructions and maybe even a carrying case. This should all factor into the price. Don't just pay more for some name brand, it may not be worth the extra money, ask around first before you buy your pocket external hard drive.
