Cheap external hard drives - price is not the only thing

Articles RSS Feed

With all the cheap external hard drives available today to back up your precious photos and data, it just doesn't make sense to risk losing those things to a computer failure. There is another reason to get an external drive too, you can free up space on your computer so it runs more smoothly and faster. Most all of us have had our computers slow down because they get over loaded with data.

Here are a few things to keep in mind as you start your search for the perfect external drive. For one thing, determine how big of a unit you want. They are all fairly compact, but there is a lot of difference in the storage size available. One of the smaller units is 320 GB (drives can hold up to 1 TB of data). But don't let the word 'small' fool you. In this case small can hold 1.2 million pictures, over 5,000 songs and 400+ movies, that's a pretty big small!

External drives are not only capable of holding a ton of data, they are also very small, portable and pretty inexpensive. It's also easy to transfer data from your computer on to the drive. Usually all it takes is to hook up a USB cable to the drive and then up to your computer. The amount of time it will take to transfer the data will, of course, depend on how much data you are transferring.

Take all of these things into consideration before you start your search. To get the absolute best deal you're most likely better off visiting online websites. This is the quickest and easiest way to compare prices. No one wants to have to drive all over town comparing features and prices, you can do that right online.

Make sure that when you look at prices you are comparing like to like. It won't do any good to compare one 320 GB external drive that only costs $80 to a 1TB external drive that costs a few hundred dollars. Decide what you need and than compare the same size and features from one model to the next.

When you find a model that you like, you've found a great price, the next step is to find out what other people think of it. An easy way to do that is to check the customer reviews right on the website where you're buying it. Most online sales sites will have customer reviews for their products. Another option is to go to a forum that relates to computer hardware and ask around. Most people will be more than happy to let you know what experiences they've had. Just take some of the reviews with a grain of salt, remember, some people just like to complain.

There are a lot of full featured, huge storage space cheap external hard drives available today. Just familiarize yourself with what size you need and than let the search begin! It's so easy to protect your precious information, why wouldn't you take the time to find a good quality drive?
